MoguWind Plan Tutorial: Getting Started Guide

MoguWind Plan is a free web tool that shows you wind conditions kilometre by kilometre on your cycling route. Here's how to use it.

If you're tired of planning a route only to hit unexpected headwinds, a MoguWind Plan tutorial can save you hours of frustration. The web planner does one thing well: it calculates the wind you'll actually encounter at each kilometre of your ride, not a single weather forecast for the whole route.

Why Wind Matters on Your Route

Most cyclists check weather apps before a ride and see "20 km/h wind" — then get pounded by a 30 km/h headwind at kilometre 40. That happens because wind changes throughout the day and across your route. A valley might be calm while a ridge gets hammered. Your afternoon loop hits the wind differently than it would in the morning.

That's why kilometre-by-kilometre wind forecasting is different from a general weather check. You need to know: at what point on my route will the wind actually hit me? How strong? From which direction?

Getting to MoguWind Plan

Open your browser and go to plan.moguwind.com. You don't need to sign up or download anything — just enter your starting point and the planner does the rest.

The interface is straightforward: a search bar at the top, a map below. Type in a location (city name, street, or landmark) and hit Enter. The map zooms to that area. No account needed; no login walls.

Building Your Route

Once you've set your starting location, you can draw a route directly on the map. Click to add waypoints — each click adds a marker. The planner automatically routes you between them using road networks, so you get a realistic path, not a straight line across a hill.

You can also import routes from other platforms. If you already ride on Strava or Komoot, export the GPX file and upload it to MoguWind Plan. The planner will load your exact route and immediately show you the wind breakdown for each segment.

Here's how the workflow looks:

Reading the Wind Data

This is where MoguWind Plan becomes genuinely useful. Below the map, you'll see a graph showing wind speed and direction at each kilometre of your route. The graph is divided into segments, each showing the exact conditions you'll hit at that point.

Look for three things:

The colour coding makes it quick to scan: green is light wind, yellow is moderate, orange is strong, red is severe. A glance tells you where the nasty sections are.

Using Wind Data to Plan Better

Now you know the wind. What do you do with it?

If you're planning a hard effort, schedule it for the tailwind section. If you're climbing, a headwind on a steep gradient is brutal — that's where pacing matters most. If you're doing a long, steady ride, knowing where the wind peaks helps you mentally prepare: you know kilometre 32–36 will be a slog into the north wind, so you don't panic when it hits.

You can also adjust your departure time. Wind often eases in early morning and picks up by afternoon. The planner lets you change the forecast date and time to see how conditions shift. Planning a 6 a.m. start instead of noon might mean 10 km/h less headwind on the return leg.

Sharing Your Route and Saving Plans

Once you've built a route, MoguWind Plan generates a shareable link. Click "Share" and send the URL to a training partner. They'll see the exact same route and wind breakdown on their device — no app download, no account needed. It's useful for coordinating group rides or showing a friend why you picked a different loop than usual.

You can also bookmark the URL in your browser to come back to it later. Each route has a unique link, so you can save as many routes as you need.

How MoguWind Plan Fits Your Routine

MoguWind Plan is built for this exact moment: the night before your ride, or Saturday morning when you're deciding between three possible loops. Pull up your options, check the wind, and pick the one that suits your goals and energy. If you're climbing tomorrow, the wind breakdown tells you where to expect punishment. If you want a fast ride, chase the tailwind sections. If you're just cruising, you'll know what to expect instead of being ambushed.

The planner is free and works on any device with a browser. No subscription, no login, no friction — just the wind forecast you actually need.

Next Step: Take Your Data to the Road

After you've planned your route in MoguWind Plan, you can take the wind forecast with you. If you own a Garmin compatible device (Edge, Fenix, Epix, or 50+ others), download the MoguWind app from the Garmin Connect IQ store. The app pairs with your route to show live wind updates as you ride, so you're always aware of conditions around the next turn.

The combination is powerful: plan your route with precise wind data on the web, then carry that intelligence on your wrist or handlebar. You'll ride smarter and save energy where it matters most.
