MoguWind APP vs Plan: which wind tool suits you
Two ways to see the wind on your rides. One fits your wrist, one fits your planning. Here's how to pick.
You're planning a 100 km route or checking conditions before a ride, and you need to know what the wind will do to you—not just a map marker, but your actual experience, kilometre by kilometre. MoguWind has two ways to answer that: the APP for your Garmin device, and the Plan web planner. Both calculate wind at each point on your route. Both are free. But they solve different problems.
MoguWind APP: Wind Data on Your Wrist During the Ride
The MoguWind APP runs on your Garmin cycling computer—whether it's an Edge 130, 530, 1040, or one of 27 other compatible devices. Once you've uploaded a route to your Garmin, the APP shows you wind speed and direction for your current location, updated in real time as you ride.
Think of it as live wind feedback. As you approach a section of road, you see the forecast wind that will hit you in the next 5 km. It's the wind companion you carry on your bars, not something you check at home before leaving.
What the APP is best for:
- Checking current and near-future wind conditions during the ride
- Making tactical decisions on the fly (ease off on a headwind section, push on a tailwind)
- Integrating wind data into your Garmin workflow without switching devices
- Getting minute-by-minute updates as the weather forecast refines
- Riders who use Garmin Connect IQ and don't want a separate app ecosystem
The APP displays wind speed, direction, and a power-impact indicator so you know roughly how much extra effort a headwind will cost you. It's designed for quick glances, not detailed analysis.
MoguWind Plan: Web Planner for Route Design and Pre-Ride Strategy
MoguWind Plan is a web-based route planner where you build or import your ride and see the wind picture before you start. Import from Strava, Komoot, or GPX; draw your own route; adjust it; then watch the wind data update for each kilometre.
The planner shows you a timeline of wind conditions across your entire route. You see elevation, distance, wind speed, direction, and power demand in a detailed breakdown. This is research mode. This is where you decide whether to ride today or reschedule, which loop works better given the forecast, or how to position yourself in a group given the wind direction.
What Plan is best for:
- Planning your route before the ride and understanding the full wind story
- Comparing multiple routes and choosing the one with better wind conditions
- Detailed analysis: which km sections are hardest, where you'll need to conserve energy
- Sharing route plans with training partners or coaching staff
- Riders using cycling computers other than Garmin, or no Garmin at all
- Long-term route library and planning without a ride computer
You can see a demo here of how wind data is presented for a real route (the Tourmalet–Hautacam climb).
Key Differences in Practice
Device dependency: The APP requires a Garmin Connect IQ compatible device. Plan works on any browser, any device. No hardware required.
Timing: The APP is for during-ride decisions. Plan is for before-ride planning. You can use both: plan your route in Plan, then refer to wind updates on the APP while riding.
Data detail: Plan gives you a complete wind profile of your entire route in one view, with granular power estimates. The APP shows a rolling window of current and near-term conditions. Plan is the archive; the APP is the live feed.
Workflow: Plan is slower, intentional. You build a route, study it, maybe adjust it, then commit. The APP is fast and reactive. You glance at your bars, adjust your pace, move on.
Cost: Both are free. Both use the same underlying wind data (Open-Meteo European model), so the forecast is identical—the difference is how and when you access it.
How Wind Data Works in Both
One key fact: MoguWind doesn't give you a single wind value for your entire route. It calculates wind speed and direction at each kilometre, at the exact time you'll be there. A 100 km ride over 4 hours crosses multiple weather systems. Your first 25 km might have a headwind; your final 25 km might be a tailwind. MoguWind shows you that variation. Windy or Ventusky show a live map; Strava doesn't address wind at all. MoguWind shows you what wind touches you, kilometre by kilometre.
Whether you're using the APP or Plan, the forecast is the same. The difference is the interface and the moment you use it.
Which Should You Choose?
Use the APP if: You ride with a Garmin device and want live wind data on your bars. You want to adjust your pacing based on current conditions. You already have a route uploaded to your Garmin and want seamless integration.
Use Plan if: You ride solo or use a non-Garmin device. You do detailed route planning and want to study the wind picture before committing. You like to compare routes and pick the windiest-day-friendly option. You coach others and want to share analysed routes with partners.
Use both if: You have a Garmin, do detailed pre-ride planning, and want wind context both before and during your ride. Plan your route in the web planner, build it on your device, then reference live wind updates on the APP as you ride. It's the complete MoguWind workflow.
Getting Started
If you have a compatible Garmin device (Edge series, most popular models since 2019), download the MoguWind APP from Connect IQ. Search "MoguWind," install, and pair with a route. It's live within minutes.
If you don't have a Garmin, or you want to start planning before you ride, open MoguWind Plan in your browser, import a Strava route or draw your own, and see the wind breakdown. No signup required, no credit card. Both tools are free.
Wind changes your ride. Knowing when it hits you, how hard, and for how long changes how you ride it. Whether you choose the APP, Plan, or both, you're riding smarter than a route alone can teach you.
